Walz did particularly well in southern Minnesota where he was the congressperson from the 1st district. Murphy, the DFL endorsed candidate and state representative from St. Paul, did well in the Twin Cities (and won Ramnsey county). Otto did well in the northern part of the state where her running mate, Rick Nolan, was a congressman for the 8th district.

Ventura won the election with 37% of the vote. Humphrey, the DFL candidate, received 28% of the vote, and Coleman, the Republican candidate, received 34% of the vote. This was the first time since the existance of the Farmer-Labor Party that a third party candidate won a gubernatorial election in Minnesota. A recent edit by a different user on Commons changed Ventura's color to a shade a purple to correspond with a precinct level map of the election.
